Help Chawton House

These are difficult and scary times, and we recognize that ours is not the only plea for financial help you are receiving. Chawton House was forced to close its doors and garden gates due to COVID-19 restrictions—just as it was starting its 2020 visitor season with renewed vigor. Last year, 60% of its operating budget came from visitor revenue. Because the closure is likely to last many months, Chawton House is once again asking Friends for help.

Consider this limited-edition Jane doll as our “thank you.” We trust she can lift collective spirits, for even Mr. Darcy himself would have to break into the hint of a smile at the charming bobble of her head! While supplies last, anyone who donates a minimum of $250 to NAFCH can opt to receive this fabulous bobblehead (one doll per household, please). A New Tradition?

If “Celebrity Jane 2020” proves popular, then you may expect another limited edition “Bobblehead Jane” in 2021 and perhaps beyond. Hopefully our special limited-edition Janes will prove such outrageously popular collectibles that this leads to an annual fundraiser/giveaway campaign.

Inspired by the recent crop of Jane Austen scholars working on celebrity culture, this particular bobblehead giveaway was actually planned to launch later this year. But Chawton House can use your help right now and, frankly, you can use a daily chuckle during this dark time. Imagine Celebrity Jane doing a little head shimmy beside your computer during the next Zoom meeting.
