Separately published between 1948 and 1958 in uniform red bindings in the series “Macdonald Illustrated Classics.” Remarkably clean and crisp with Gough’s whimsical [Darcy wears pink!] color illustrations throughout each volume. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which were published in the same manner as late as 1961, are not present [see Gilson E325 and E327].

Jane Austen. Five Vintage Paperbacks.

Mix of five vintage paperbacks with fabulous covers, from 1960 to the mid-1990s, three of which appear in The Lost Books of Jane Austen (pp. 193, 231, 232). The standout rarity here is the copy of Pride and Prejudice published in 1959 by Paul Elek of London as part of the “Bestseller Library” series. Original price in 1960 was 3s.6d. [Gilson records it at E303, noting “not seen.”]

Jane Austen. The Works of Jane Austen.
Illustrated by Maximilien Vox.
London: J. M. Dent & Sons, 1933-34. 4 vols.

The full set was seven volumes [not numbered], but here included are four: P&P, NA, Persuasion, and Sanditon. All have the special endpapers with Jane Austen’s initials.

The P&P volume was once claimed by “Joan Mary Redman, November 1940” who was willing to share her books during wartime, but only under certain conditions, which she wrote at the front of this copy with a bit of rhyming flourish in a youthful hand: “Neither blemish this book, (the leaves double down) Nor Lend it to each idle friend in town; Return it when read, or if lost, please supply another as good to the mind & the eye. With right & with reason you need but be friends, and each book in my study you[r] pleasure attends.” As a result, her copy (and the other three) remains in very good nick. [Gilson E181]

Jane Austen. Juvenilia, Lady Susan, Sanditon.
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1925-51.

These are the first versions of Sanditon, Lady Susan and the juvenilia that were edited by R. W. Chapman for the Clarendon Press, 1925-1951. Four volumes, published individually but uniformly bound in blue/grey paper boards with paper spine labels. The publisher supplied extra paper labels, tipped in at the back, should the originals fall off (three vols contain even the extras). VERY GOOD condition, remarkably clean.

Jane Austen. Love & Freindship and Other Early Works

Now First Printed from the Original MS, with a preface by G. K. Chesterton. London: Chatto & Windus, 1922.

This is the first publication of Love and Freindship. Very rare in original dust jacket because the printed wrapper around this prettily-bound edition was meant to be tossed by the consumer in order to display the gilt-stamped boards of heavy red paper. Colored pictorial endpapers with Cassandra Austen’s illustrations for The History of England. VERY GOOD+ condition, in a FAIR only wrapper (see photos) [Gilson F3].

NEAR FINE, with inner commemorative endpapers a bit discolored, otherwise mint. A much-collected and desirable edition. [Gilson E120]

Handpainted Volume of Cowper

This book is decorated with scenes of “The Island,” as Fanny calls the Isle of Wight, much to the amusement of Miss Lee, Maria and Julia. Original seascapes in acrylic, painted by artist Linda Dennery on the front and back boards of a second volume to an 1854 reprinting of William Cowper’s poetry. This stray volume was lovingly salvaged and repaired by the artist before being used as a canvas for her expressive artwork. This is book art in every sense of that phrase!

Late Georgian Pin / Pendant

She is really lovely — high relief strawberry agate, exquisitely carved, gold mount. This elegant lady is well-travelled: the product of Italian craftsmanship, she was purchased in Edinburgh in 1969, and since then has been attending cultural gatherings in New York City for decades.

H 3 cm x W 2.4 cm x D 1 cm

A simple brooch, but the mount includes a ring that allows it to also be worn on a thin chain. The pin of white gold suggests a repair, which may explain why it comes with a small detachable safety pin on a fine chain as a charming optional security feature. On the back of the mount is visible a simple inscription: this is not a hallmark but likely the mark of a repairer.

Originally published in 1892, this is the 5th reprint of the 2 volumes of Mansfield Park. Each of the novels in the ten-volume set were published individually and reprinted several times. This title with the Cooke illustrations is very uncommon and desirable, a must-have for the collector and all lovers of MP.

16mo, greenish-white smooth cloth with cartouche with Austen crest on front boards with Jane Austen’s facsimile signature, gilt decorated spines, and 3 sepia-toned illustrations by Cooke in each volume. Condition is VERY GOOD with some rubbing to gilt on spines, 2 faint red stains on front board of vol. 1, slight rippling to front boards of vol. 2.

Both volumes retain an early bookseller’s ticket of Benjamin Henry Blackwell’s shop in Oxford. Printed in Edinburgh, published in London, and sold in Oxford, this copy exudes visceral authenticity. The printed Ex Libris plates remains empty in both volumes, ready for your signature!
